Partnership Extended for Mazda and Famed Raceway

Motorsports enthusiasts who have only jumped on the racing bandwagon in the past few years might not know that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca didn't always bear the lauded Mazda nameplate. In fact, the famous California-based raceway and Mazda only began their partnership in 2001. However, with ten years of successful sponsorship under its belt, Mazda has been given the go-ahead to remain in alliance with Laguna Seca until 2016.

For those who might not be aware, the legendary Monterey, California raceway is home to one of the world's finest natural road-racing courses and hosts motorcycle and auto races alike. Upon signing on with the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) in 2001, Mazda quickly began to take an active role in improving the premium course's facility in any way possible. More specifically, the automaker has helped establish permanent pit lane garages and luxury hospitality suites, expand track runoff, and enhance spectator viewing features.

Of course, the partnership is entirely mutually beneficial. Mazda might be helping the raceway retain its premium position but Laguna Seca has spurred a passion in Mazda employees in return. Jay Amestoy, Vice President of Public Affairs and Motorsports for Mazda, happily explains, "We first fell in love with this track and the Monterey peninsula as fans in the 1970s and '80s...Our successful partnership with SCRAMP and the Monterey County Parks Department during the last dozen years has made the raceway our home-away-from-home."1
